The Power of Setting Intention

As we transition into another seeming year, we typically gravitate to perceptions like what we are grateful for; what we learned in the last year; and the wisdom gained that we intend on taking forward into this seeming “new year.” And essentially – what we envision cultivating to becoming a healthier, happier and more peaceful person.

The classic Vedic text known as the Upanishads asserts, “You are what your deepest desire is. As your desire is, so is your intention. As your intention is, so is your will. As your will is, so is your deed. As your deed is, so is your destiny.”

And so we plant our seeds of intention, we water them, ensure they receive sunlight (nourishment) – and then we remain open and accept with utmost faith, what comes.

Here are a few pointers to support you in powerfully setting your intentions:

    • Consider meditating for a minimum of 20 – 30 minutes before setting your intention. This will help clear your mind, bringing stillness and spaciousness. The most fertile ground for sowing our seeds of intention!
    • Intention is much more potent when it comes from a place of ease and joy, rather than arising from a sense of lack or need.
    • Shift your orientation from being limited to being limitless.
    • Be in the place of gratitude when setting the intent. Recognize your present blessings. Express with thanks for what is coming, whatever it may be. For it is a gift from Grace.
    • Ask yourself WHY do you want this? Be completely honest. If it rings true and resonates from the core of your being – good.
    • Focus on that which is meaningful rather than egocentric. Align your intent with a higher purpose. Consider how you can best serve others while being true to yourself. The universal support you reap when you bring a greater spiritual meaning to your physical experience is the most powerful.
    • Be clear and specific. Know what you want, and be realistic.
    • It can help to write it down or journal about it in order to get clear about it.
    • After you set an intention, let it go—simply stop thinking about it. Offer it to the Goddess and receive what comes as a blessing.
    • Surrender your attachment to a specific outcome by living in the wisdom of uncertainty. Attachment is based on fear and insecurity, while detachment is based on faith in everything gracefully unfolding as it should.
    • Surrender the “how.” Try not to get engrossed in what the Universe/life/Spirit/Goddess is going to send you. Be simply aware and open.
    • Take action. Do something daily or weekly that will focus your attention on your objective. Start with the small things. And most importantly, remember to do with an attitude of total surrender to the results. Trust, have faith.
    • Notice any synchronicities that begin to unfold to support your vision. AKA: things beginning to flow. Get inspired that things are falling into place! (Again, with an attitude of complete surrender.) Tune into this flow and ride the wave!
    • Be patient. Don’t be hard on yourself. Practice non-judgment.
